US Universities 2026–27 Early Deadlines Split Nov 1 and 2: ED, EA, REA and RD Explained

The Common App opened on 1 Aug 2026 for Fall 2027 entry. With 1 Nov falling on a Sunday, several top schools moved early deadlines to 2 Nov. Hong Kong applicants must watch time zones and binding commitments.

The 2026–27 US admissions cycle is underway. The Common Application opened to first-year applicants on 1 August 2026, letting students build accounts, add colleges, and start filling profiles, activity lists and essays. Registration is possible before August, but the platform only refreshes each school’s supplemental prompts, fees and recommendation requirements on that date, so the real submission window starts then.

Early plans differ sharply in obligation and timing. Early Decision (ED) is binding: if admitted, the student, parents and counselor sign the ED agreement to withdraw all other applications and enrol. ED I typically closes on 1 or 15 November with mid-December decisions; ED II falls on 1–15 January with mid-to-late February decisions, carrying the same binding commitment. Early Action (EA) is non-binding — an early answer but the student may wait until 1 May to commit.

This year is unusual because 1 November is a Sunday; the Common App grid updated on 25 September shows USC and Stanford keeping ED and EA on 1 November, while Carnegie Mellon, Duke, the University of Chicago (ED and EA) and Boston University (ED) moved to 2 November. Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford use Restrictive Early Action (REA/SCEA) also due 1 November — non-binding but limiting simultaneous early applications to other private schools.

Regular Decision (RD) mostly closes 1–15 January, a few extending to February; the University of California system has no early round and keeps its 30 November deadline. Application fees typically run US$50–90 per school, and ten or more schools can exceed US$750 total — eligible students can apply for a fee waiver through the Common App grid, but only before submitting, never retroactively.

Time zones are the trap Hong Kong applicants most often miss. Most schools use 11:59pm in the applicant’s local time, but some specify Eastern Time. If EST is specified, a Hong Kong applicant’s local deadline is 11:59pm — not late night — and the school’s own website always governs. Verify both the date and the time zone on the target college’s admissions page once more before submitting.

Strategy for Hong Kong applicants: set mid-October as the hard deadline for the main essay, leaving buffer for recommendations, transcripts and standardised tests; ED applicants should make the file genuinely strong before November rather than rush the early round; RD applicants should start by October to avoid the December–January crush. Whichever path, submit 48–72 hours ahead — deadline-night server load and submission errors are common.

One closing thought: ED signals commitment to a first-choice school and may lift odds, but only when the application is truly strong; RD faces a larger pool yet lets you build a fuller profile and compare aid. The real question was never “which round” but “what you add before any deadline”.
