Official notice
The EDB page for Secondary School Places Allocation sets out, for S1 entry in September 2027: discretionary place applications run 4 to 18 January 2027; participating secondary schools notify, in writing (letter or email) and by telephone on 31 March 2027, the parents of all students placed on their discretionary positive list; central allocation school selection runs from early April to early May 2027; results for both discretionary places and central allocation are released on 6 July 2027; and S1 registration takes place on 8 and 9 July 2027.
Gradepath analysis
This timeline turns “getting into secondary school” from a January paperwork exercise into a nine-month race, and three nodes are routinely overlooked. First, central allocation selection spans only about one month from early April to early May — the sole window to reorder preferences if the discretionary round falls through. Second, what the EDB specifies for 31 March is a notification to positive-list parents, not a simultaneous notice to everyone else; silence on that day does not mean the discretionary outcome is final, so do not abandon your central allocation planning early. Third, results land on 6 July and registration runs only on 8 and 9 July; families travelling without a pre-arranged authorised representative forfeit the place — the most common and most avoidable way to lose a school place. Put all five dates in the family calendar today, and use next April as the mid-course checkpoint from which to back-plan the second and third internal assessments.
