Breaking Down Entrance Requirements for the Four New Programmes: English from Level 3 to Level 5

Official programme pages list minimum core and elective levels; the English requirement alone spans two levels.

Official notice

The official “Programme Entrance Requirements” sections read as follows. JS6133 Bachelor of Arts Elite Programme (HKU): Chinese Language 3, Citizenship and Social Development Attained, English Language 3, Mathematics (Compulsory Part) 2; electives must include any one subject other than Applied Learning and Other Language at level 3, plus any one subject other than Applied Learning at level 3, or alternatively Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2 at level 3. JS6365 Bachelor of Engineering in Robotics Engineering (HKU): Chinese Language 3, Citizenship and Social Development Attained, English Language 4, Mathematics (Compulsory Part) 4; one elective must be Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Combined Science at level 3; the remark states that level 3 or above in Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2 is preferred but not required. JS1063 Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (Stream: Artificial Intelligence) (Double Degree) (CityUHK): Chinese Language 3, Citizenship and Social Development Attained, English Language 5, Mathematics (Compulsory Part) 3; one elective must be Biology, Chemistry, Information and Communication Technology, Physics or Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2 at level 3, plus any one subject at level 3. JS1120 Social and Arts Global Excellence (CityUHK): Chinese Language 3, Citizenship and Social Development Attained, English Language 3, Mathematics (Compulsory Part) 2; any two subjects at level 3; the note states that Applied Learning subjects do not count as electives and that taking both Mathematics Extended Module 1 and 2 counts as one subject only.

Gradepath analysis

Laid side by side, the gap matters far more than any average: English ranges from level 3 for JS6133 and JS1120 to level 4 for JS6365 and level 5 for JS1063, while Mathematics (Compulsory Part) ranges from level 2 up to level 4 for JS6365. New programmes, in other words, are not one difficulty tier, and a single score cannot be used to guess all four. The second point is how differently electives are constrained: JS6365 requires one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Combined Science, so a student without a science elective fails the minimum even with strong core subjects; JS1063 accepts Information and Communication Technology or an extended mathematics module in place of a science, but still asks for one more subject at level 3; JS1120 looks broadest on paper with any two subjects at level 3, yet the official note excludes Applied Learning subjects entirely and counts M1 plus M2 as a single subject, so any combination padded with Applied Learning loses a subject the moment it is counted. Third, where JS6365 marks Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2 as preferred but not required, that means no disqualification without an extended module — it is an advantage, not a gate — but that wording applies to that programme alone and must not be extrapolated to the other three. Finally, keep minimum entrance requirements separate from admission scores: what this page lists is the floor for eligibility, and the page publishes no average admission score or intake figure here.
