79th Music Festival: enrolment closes 28 Oct, contests run from Feb 2027

The 79th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival (2027) closes enrolment at 5pm on 28 October, with live contests from 22 February to 24 March 2027. The syllabus for Classes 87, 88 and 243 has also been updated.

The Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association has published the key dates for the 79th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival (2027): the syllabus was released on its website on 25 August 2026 at 10:00 a.m.; competition forms became available for members and competitors to download from 22 September at 10:00 a.m.; the enrolment period runs from 29 September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. to 28 October 2026 at 5:00 p.m.; cheque payment for submitted entries is due by 3 November; under the live competition mode, the Own Choice Form and original composition must be submitted between 6 November at 10:00 a.m. and 16 November at 5:00 p.m., with copies of Own Choice full scores due by 10 December at 5:00 p.m.; the live festival runs from 22 February to 24 March 2027; the video submission period runs from 19 to 25 January 2027; and the competition results report becomes downloadable on 30 April 2027. The Association has also updated the syllabus for Classes 87, 88 and 243, and states that the Syllabus Amendment and Class Information Update is not incorporated into the Music Festival Syllabus, so participants must read the two together.

Gradepath analysis

The Music Festival and the Speech Festival are the Association's two territory-wide competitions. For a candidate its value is not the trophy but the record: it is one of the few activities that come with a year, a class and written adjudication you can cite concretely in a self-recommendation or interview. The real pressure point is 5:00 p.m. on 28 October — once enrolment closes, the 3 November cheque payment and the Own Choice and score submissions from 6 November no longer apply to you. The second trap is the amendment: the Association states explicitly that the amendments are not incorporated into the syllabus itself, so reading only the syllabus means missing the changes to Classes 87, 88 and 243. Prepare an own-choice piece against a superseded syllabus and you will not find out until November, too late to change. Note too that the Association lists eligible universities and post-secondary institutes separately, with its own enrolment link: routes differ by applicant type, so confirm with your school or the Association rather than assuming it works like the Speech Festival.
