HKCC age limits count from the start month: Chinese dance needs the age by 1 January

The official age table counts from the month practice begins: choir 5 to 15, IEC 2 years 6 months to 4 years 11 months. Chinese dance carries an attained-age date.

Official notice

The Hong Kong Children’s Choir’s official age table is calculated by the month practice begins and is split into “January course” and “July course” columns: choir, 5 to 15 (apply in August; July course not applicable); Chinese dance, 3 years 6 months to 4 years 11 months (to meet public examination requirements, the age must be attained by 1 January) / 4 years 6 months to 15 (age attained by 1 July), applying in February; tap dance, jazz and hip hop, 4 to 6 / 5 to 10; harmonica and handbell, 5 to 15 / 5 years 4 months to 15, and percussion 5 to 15 (July course not applicable); Putonghua, 4 to 8 years 11 months / 5 to 8 years 11 months, applying in February; and the IEC programme, 2 years 6 months to 4 years 11 months, applying in November and May.

Gradepath analysis

Three places where families miscalculate: first, age is counted from the month practice starts, not the day the form is filed — a child who is 4 years 10 months now qualifies for the July Chinese dance course but is already over the limit for the January course. Second, the attained-age date tied to public examination requirements is a hard line: the age must be reached by 1 January or 1 July. Third, the two intakes of the same group do not share a threshold — Chinese dance differs by nearly a year, harmonica and handbell by four months — so last round’s numbers cannot be carried over.
