RUG tuition deadlines differ for non-EU applicants, and when refunds are still possible

The university must receive tuition by 31 August 2027; non-EU students may face different dates, and cancelling before the start date brings a full refund.

Step 6 of the University of Groningen registration page states that to start on 1 September the UG must have received payment no later than 31 August, with a footnote reading "For non-EU students, other deadlines may apply due to the immigration procedure". Asked what happens if payment is late, the page answers "Then you will not be enrolled", with knock-on effects on teaching and examinations, library access, student finance and the student travel product. Step 5 carries an "Important for non-EU applicants" note: a different deadline may apply to applicants with a non-EU nationality, and applicants should check the decision letter and other information from the Admissions Office. The enrolment section adds that registration can be cancelled through Studielink up until the starting date with tuition fees reimbursed in full — a 1 September start can be cancelled until 31 August, a 1 February start until 31 January — after which one may only deregister. Recipients of DUO student finance must notify DUO in time.

Gradepath analysis

First, 31 August is the day the university receives the money, not the day you send it: the wording is "must have received your payment", and an international transfer needs clearance time on top, so leaving yourself two or three days is asking for trouble. Second, Hong Kong applicants are non-EU, and the university says deadlines may differ for a reason: the residence permit has to be granted first. Your actual date sits in the decision letter from the Admissions Office, so copy it into your calendar the day it arrives rather than borrowing 31 August from the website. Third, the refund window closes at the start date: the university spells out that a 1 September start can be cancelled through Studielink until 31 August with fees reimbursed in full, after which one may only deregister. To put it plainly, the cost of "enrol now and decide later" jumps from nothing to a full year of fees on the day term begins. Fourth, anyone drawing DUO student finance must also notify DUO promptly, or financial problems follow. Fifth, non-payment cascades: no enrolment means no teaching, no examinations, no library, and trouble with DUO and the travel product — this is not solved by paying a late fee.
